Elsie Bae Han

Elsie Bae Han is a Boston-based violist, improviser, and composer. Han is particularly interested in understanding the mundanities of life through the creation of sound worlds that exist between the notes, e. g. the unique technical sounds produced by each instrument. Her music brings to attention the physicality required in producing noise and aims to distort the feeling of the passage of time for the audience. Han’s music was recently featured on the opening concert for the 2021 NASA (North American Saxophone Alliance) Region IV conference. She is a founding and active member of the New Music Mosaic, an organization of young music professionals working for young music professionals. In the future, Han hopes to delve more into interdisciplinary media.

As a performer, Han seeks to present music that surprises and excites her audience. Her love for free improvisation and performance art was what launched her into the world of new music. Han has attended festivals such as: New Music on the Point, the Castleman Quartet Program, Music at Salem, and the Apple Hill Summer Chamber Program. She has also worked with members of the JACK Quartet, Tony Arnold, Pamela Z, Lisa Coons, and Renee Baker among others. Han is currently working on her master’s degree in contemporary classical music performance at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee studying under Professor Lila Brown. She received her bachelor’s degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign studying under Prof. Liz Freivogel.
